How to mute a video in CapCut

Updated October 11, 2026

Quick answer

In CapCut, select the clip on the timeline and set its volume to zero, or use the speaker icon at the start of the main track to mute the original sound. Then export: the video will be silent, and you can add music or a voice-over before you do.

Mute a clip in the CapCut mobile app

CapCut changes its interface often, so labels can differ slightly between versions. The controls below have been in the app for a long time.

  1. Open CapCut, start a new project and add your video.
  2. To mute everything on the main track, tap the speaker icon at the left end of the timeline, next to the first clip.
  3. To mute a single clip, tap the clip to select it, tap Volume in the toolbar at the bottom, drag the slider to 0 and confirm.
  4. Play the project to check that the original sound is gone.
  5. Tap Export (the arrow at the top right) and choose the resolution and frame rate.

Mute a clip in CapCut on desktop

  1. Import your video and drag it onto the timeline.
  2. Click the clip to select it. The panel on the right shows the clip’s settings.
  3. Open the audio section and move the volume slider all the way down.
  4. To mute a whole track instead, click the speaker icon in that track’s header on the left of the timeline.
  5. Click Export, choose the settings and export the video.

CapCut’s own troubleshooting page points out that a muted track or a volume slider at zero is a common reason sound doesn’t play. If you mute a track and later add music to it, the music is muted too.

Remove the original sound completely

Muting keeps the audio in the project at zero volume. If you want to get rid of it, for example to put a voice-over in its place, separate the sound first. Select the clip and use the option to separate or extract its audio (on desktop, right-click the clip; on mobile, look in the clip’s toolbar). The sound appears as its own clip below the video. Select that audio clip and delete it.

Separating is also useful when you want to keep only part of the original sound: split the audio clip where you need to and delete only the pieces you don’t want.

Replace the sound with music or a voice-over

Once the original sound is muted or deleted, use the audio tools in CapCut to add a track from its sound library, import your own audio file, or record a voice-over directly in the app. New audio goes on its own row under the video, so muting the video clip doesn’t affect it. Trim the music to the length of the video and add a short fade at the end so it doesn’t stop abruptly.

If you mute the main track with the speaker icon and then add sound on a separate audio row, only the main track stays silent. Check the result by playing the whole project before exporting.

Export and quality

CapCut renders a new video on export, so the result is re-encoded with the resolution, frame rate and quality you choose. Pick settings that match your original, for example 1080p at the same frame rate, to avoid a softer or choppier result. If you plan to post on TikTok or Instagram, you can also add music in those apps after uploading the silent video.

Muting removes the sound, not anything in the picture. A watermark from another app or captions burned into the video stay visible.

Questions and answers

Why does my CapCut export still have sound?

Usually another clip or track still has audio, such as a second video layer, an added sound effect or a duplicated clip. Check the volume of every clip and track, or separate the audio and delete it.

Can I mute only part of a clip in CapCut?

Yes. Split the clip (or its separated audio) at the start and end of the part you want silent, select the middle piece and set its volume to zero.

Does muting a video help avoid copyright claims?

Removing the original sound removes music you didn’t license from your video, but platforms run their own checks and can still flag content for other reasons. Muting alone won’t keep every video safe.
