What happens to your file
A video file is a container: one track holds the picture, other tracks hold sound, subtitles or timecode. To mute a video, MuteVideo removes the audio tracks and copies the picture track exactly as it was — nothing is decoded or compressed again.
For MP4 and MOV, only the file’s index is rewritten in your browser. The picture data is referenced in place, so even large files finish in seconds without filling your device’s memory.
For WebM, MKV and AVI, an FFmpeg engine compiled to WebAssembly runs in your browser tab and performs the same stream copy.
Your video is read from your device and saved back to it. It isn’t sent to a server.
Good to know
Where WebM files come from
WebM is the format many browser-based screen recorders and web apps save to. Those recordings often include system sounds, a microphone you forgot to switch off, or a call in the background. Muting them leaves a clean visual walkthrough.
How WebM processing works
WebM files are handled by an FFmpeg engine compiled to WebAssembly that runs in your browser. It copies the video stream without re-encoding. The engine is about 31 MB, downloads on first use and is usually cached by your browser after that.
Size limits for WebM
WebM files can be up to 500 MB on desktop and 150 MB on mobile, because the engine works in browser memory. If your recorder can also save MP4, that format is handled differently and accepts files up to 4 GB.

Questions and answers
Does the output stay WebM?
Yes. The container and video stream are kept; only the audio is removed.
Why is there a short wait the first time?
The engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded on first use. Your browser usually caches it, so later files start faster.
Can I preview the result?
Yes, in browsers that play WebM. You can also switch back to the original to compare.
