What happens to your file

A video file is a container: one track holds the picture, other tracks hold sound, subtitles or timecode. To mute a video, MuteVideo removes the audio tracks and copies the picture track exactly as it was — nothing is decoded or compressed again.

For MP4 and MOV, only the file’s index is rewritten in your browser. The picture data is referenced in place, so even large files finish in seconds without filling your device’s memory.

For WebM, MKV and AVI, an FFmpeg engine compiled to WebAssembly runs in your browser tab and performs the same stream copy.

Your video is read from your device and saved back to it. It isn’t sent to a server.

Good to know

Photos can already mute one video

If you only need to silence a single clip on your iPhone, the Photos app can do it: open the video, tap Edit, then tap the speaker icon. For one video already on your phone, that is often the quickest route.

When MuteVideo is the better fit

MuteVideo helps when the clips are already on a computer, when you have several to mute at once, or when you want a separate silent file next to an untouched original. Add up to 20 videos and download them individually or as one ZIP.

HEVC, ProRes and the preview

iPhones usually record HEVC (H.265), and some Pro models can record ProRes. MuteVideo copies the video stream without re-encoding, so quality is unchanged. Some browsers cannot play HEVC, so the preview may not show, but the download works normally.

Location in iPhone videos

iPhone videos can include the place they were recorded. MOV and MP4 metadata is kept by default; turn on “Remove location and device metadata” if you’d rather not share it. Anything visible in the picture is not affected.

Questions and answers

Can I mute a video in the iPhone Photos app?

Yes, one at a time: open the video, tap Edit and tap the speaker icon. MuteVideo is useful for several clips, files on a computer, or when you need a separate silent copy.

Will muting reduce the quality of my iPhone video?

No. The HEVC, H.264 or ProRes video is copied without re-encoding.

Can I use MuteVideo on my iPhone?

Yes, in a mobile browser. MOV and MP4 files up to 4 GB are supported; speed depends on your phone and the file.

Is location data removed?

Only if you turn on “Remove location and device metadata”. By default, MOV and MP4 metadata is kept.
