What happens to your file

A video file is a container: one track holds the picture, other tracks hold sound, subtitles or timecode. To mute a video, MuteVideo removes the audio tracks and copies the picture track exactly as it was — nothing is decoded or compressed again.

For MP4 and MOV, only the file’s index is rewritten in your browser. The picture data is referenced in place, so even large files finish in seconds without filling your device’s memory.

For WebM, MKV and AVI, an FFmpeg engine compiled to WebAssembly runs in your browser tab and performs the same stream copy.

Your video is read from your device and saved back to it. It isn’t sent to a server.

Good to know

Made for iPhone and camera MOV files

iPhones and many cameras record MOV files with H.264, HEVC (H.265) or ProRes video. MuteVideo copies that video stream bit for bit and removes only the audio, so resolution, frame rate and quality are exactly as recorded.

If the preview does not play

Some browsers cannot play HEVC video, so the preview may stay blank. That is a playback limit of the browser, not a problem with the file: processing and download still work, and the MOV plays in apps that support HEVC.

Large ProRes files

ProRes clips are large even when they are short. MOV files are handled without loading the whole file into memory, up to 4 GB each, so they typically finish in seconds rather than minutes.

Location and device details

MOV files from phones often carry the recording date, device model and location. These are kept by default. Turn on “Remove location and device metadata” to delete the common metadata containers before you share the file.

Questions and answers

Will my MOV be converted to MP4?

No. The result stays in the MOV container; only the audio is removed.

Why doesn’t the preview play my video?

Your browser may not support HEVC playback. The file is still processed correctly and can be downloaded.

Is ProRes supported?

Yes. ProRes video is copied without re-encoding, the same as HEVC and H.264.

How large can a MOV file be?

Up to 4 GB per file.
