How to send a video without sound on WhatsApp
Quick answer
On Android or iPhone, open a chat, attach the video, tap the speaker icon on the editing screen to turn off its audio, and send. WhatsApp’s help center doesn’t list a mute option for WhatsApp Web or the desktop apps, so there you remove the sound from the file before attaching it.
Mute a video in WhatsApp on Android or iPhone
WhatsApp’s video editor has a mute control that turns off the audio in the video you’re about to send.
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the attach icon in the message field and choose a video from your gallery or photo library, or tap the camera icon to record a new one.
- On the editing screen, tap the speaker icon to turn off the audio. It shows as muted when the sound is off.
- Optionally trim the video with the slider at the top, or tap the quality option to choose Standard or HD.
- Add a caption if you like and tap Send.
The mute applies to the copy you send. The video in your gallery keeps its sound. If you don’t see the speaker icon, update WhatsApp to the latest version, or mute the file in another app before attaching it.
On WhatsApp Web, Windows or Mac
On computers, WhatsApp’s help center describes trimming videos and adjusting photo quality, but not muting. Remove the sound from the file first, then attach the silent copy.
- Make a silent copy of the video. On a Mac, open it in QuickTime Player, choose Edit > Remove Audio and save. On Windows, mute the clip in Clipchamp and export it. In any browser, MuteVideo does it without installing anything.
- In WhatsApp, open the chat and click the attach icon, then Photos & Videos.
- Select the silent file and click Send.
Size, format and quality limits
- Videos sent as media have a default limit of 100 MB and 720p on faster connections, or 64 MB and 480p on slower ones.
- WhatsApp supports 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV and MP4 video. WebM isn’t on the list, so convert WebM files to MP4 first.
- Status videos can be up to 90 seconds long, and HD isn’t available for Status.
- Media is usually compressed when shared. To send the original file, attach it as a document instead, which allows up to 2 GB.
Removing the audio makes a file slightly smaller, but rarely enough to change which limit applies. If a video is too big, trim it or send it as a document.
Why send a video without sound
- Privacy: background conversations, other people’s voices or a TV in the room can reveal more than you meant to share.
- Noise: wind, traffic or a loud venue can make a clip unpleasant to watch with sound on.
- Context: a silent screen recording or product clip is often clearer when you explain it in the caption instead.
Muting removes only the sound. Anything visible in the frame, and any location data stored in the file, can still be shared, so check both before sending something sensitive.
Questions and answers
Does muting a video in WhatsApp change the original on my phone?
No. The mute only affects the video you send. The copy in your gallery or photo library keeps its sound.
Can I send a muted video without losing quality?
Choose HD quality on the editing screen, or for the original file, mute it in another app first and attach it as a document (up to 2 GB). Documents arrive as files rather than inline videos.
Can I mute a video I’m posting to my Status?
If the speaker icon appears when you add the video to Status, tap it as you would in a chat. If it doesn’t, mute the file in another app first and then post it.
